On 26th Dec 2004 the Aceh region of Sumatra, Indonesia was devastated by an earthquake and a tsunami.   The scale of destruction was immense. Across Indonesia approximately 500,000 were made homeless. As the region closest to the earthquake's epicentre, Aceh was hit particularly hard. In response to this disaster the German and Indonesian governments entered into an agreement to undertake reconstruction of affected communities.   Out of this agreement project RRHS, or ‘Rehabilitation and Reconstruction of Housing and Settlements, Aceh Province’, was born. The immediate aim of RRHS is the reconstruction of homes and infrastructure. The construction process is guided at every stage by a broader goal: rebuilding communities. This website provides a background to the philosophy and approach of the project, outlining its goals and achievements, and introducing the people involved.
